Sharjah 24 – Reuters: The first tuna auction of the year was held on Sunday (January 5) at a fish market in Tokyo where a blue fin tuna was sold at 193 million yen (1.8 million USD), the second highest price in history.
The tuna was caught in waters off Japan's northern Aomori Prefecture and weighed 276 kilograms.
The successful buyer was Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of a sushi restaurant chain "Sushizanmai" which is headquartered in Tsukiji near where the fish market was located before moving
Kimura is a regular at the New Year auction. He was the successful bidder last year for the most expensive tuna on record, paying more than 336.6 million yen (3 million USD) for a blue fin tuna.
