Sharjah 24: Sharjah Women's Sports Club collected four medals and the runner-up cup in the junior category at the 2026 Swiss Open Taekwondo tournament, marking their second international outing of the new 2026-2027 season and underlining the growing technical level of their junior and youth fighters against a wide range of schools.

Two golds anchor the junior campaign

The junior category delivered the standout results. Nour Issa Al Shemaili, of Sharjah Sports Club for Women, won gold in the under-33kg division, while her clubmate Majida Rashed Al Ketbi took gold under 51kg. Between them, the pair steered the club to the runner-up cup in the junior category, blending individual wins with a strong overall team showing.

Bronze medals in the youth division

The podium presence extended into the youth category. Shamma Mohammed Al Suwaidi, also of Sharjah Sports Club for Women, took bronze under 55 kg, while Rayan Najib Al Zaabi, of Kalba Sports Club for Women, won bronze under 42 kg — lifting the overall haul for Sharjah's women's clubs to four medals at the tournament.

Longer-term development plan

The results carry added weight given the clubs' ongoing initiative to sharpen the technical and tactical skills of players across age groups, gradually building their capabilities to prepare them for higher levels of competition. The value is heightened further by the fact that several of the players involved have only been training for a short time, yet still held their own against more experienced rivals from established European schools.

Technical director: part of an integrated pathway

Abdullah Hatem, taekwondo technical director at Sharjah Women's Sports Club, said the results in Switzerland carried real significance for the programme.

"These results reflect the continuous work being done to develop players across the age groups, following a clear and carefully considered technical pathway," he said. "We don't treat any external participation as a standalone event — it's part of an integrated process of building the player. Through it, we test her progress, give her the experience of competing against different schools, and pinpoint more precisely what she needs to work on next."

He added that the junior category's two golds and runner-up cup, alongside the two youth bronzes, were a positive sign of the pathway's progress and of the players' ability to convert their training into performance and results at international competitions. "Our goal is for this development to continue from one age group to the next and to build a generation with the experience and technical quality needed to compete at the continental and international levels as part of a long-term ambition that reaches all the way to Olympic qualification," he said.

Second international stop

The Swiss tournament marked the second international stop for Sharjah Women's Sports taekwondo this season, following the Al Hussein International Taekwondo Championship in Jordan, where the players opened their external campaign with three medals — one silver and two bronze. The back-to-back participations since the start of the season point to a clear strategy of giving players early international exposure and building competitive experience on a regular basis, supporting the development pathway across age groups and preparing them for what comes next.
