Sharjah 24 – QNA: Indonesia's Mount Sinabung erupted on Monday, projecting a thick column of black ash 3,500 meters into the atmosphere and prompting authorities to elevate the volcano's alert status amid warnings of a potential larger eruption.

Villages covered in volcanic ash

While no immediate casualties, evacuations, or flight disruptions were reported, the eruption coated several villages in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, with thick gray ash that blanketed roads, buildings, and vehicles.

Authorities warn of further activity

In response to heightened seismic activity leading up to the event, the Geological Agency raised the volcano's status from Level II (Caution) to Level III (Alert). Agency head Lana Saria noted that further major activity cannot be ruled out.

Officials continue to monitor the volcano closely and have strictly prohibited residents and tourists from entering any areas within 6 kilometers of the summit.
