Sharjah 24: The UAE national team delivered a stellar opening performance on Monday, capturing 12 medals—5 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze—on the first day of the IMMAF World Junior Championships at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi.

Running through August 23, the seventh edition of the championships kicked off with competitions in the Junior (D) category for athletes aged 10 to 11. Nineteen members of the UAE squad participated in this bracket, marking its second appearance since being introduced at the 2025 tournament. The event's grand opening featured a vibrant musical performance, a retrospective film highlighting the tournament's history, and a unique exhibition robot fight that blended athletics with advanced technology.

High-profile officials attend opening

The day's events drew high-profile sports leaders and government officials, including His Excellency Abdulmunem Al Sayed Mohammed Al Hashemi, President of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation; Kerrith Brown, President of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF); and H.E. Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, alongside several other distinguished board members and government dignitaries.

Abu Dhabi’s vision for youth development

Highlighting the significance of the event, His Excellency Abdulmunem Al Hashemi noted that Abu Dhabi’s hosting of five consecutive World Championships reflects a strategic vision aimed at building an integrated system for youth talent discovery and athletic development. He emphasized that the national team's strong start stems from a long-term federation strategy focused on comprehensive training, robust international exposure, and close collaboration with clubs, coaches, and families.

IMMAF highlights athlete development

IMMAF President Kerrith Brown praised the tournament's role in the global development of mixed martial arts, emphasizing player safety, proper preparation, and progressive pathways for young athletes. He noted that the introduction of new age categories, culminating in the Junior (D) category, enhances opportunities for player development and prepares them for subsequent stages, while commending the UAE's ongoing partnership and advanced organizational infrastructure. The championships will continue tomorrow with the Junior (C) category matches for athletes aged 12 to 13.
