Mark Bommel appointed Belgium head coach

Sharjah 24 – AFP: The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has appointed former Netherlands international Mark van Bommel as the new head coach of the Belgian national team on a contract running through UEFA EURO 2028.

The 49-year-old replaces Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who left the role after leading Belgium to the World Cup quarter-finals. Van Bommel said he was honoured by the appointment and praised Belgium’s talented squad, saying he aims to build a disciplined and ambitious team capable of competing with the world’s best.

Background and coaching experience

Van Bommel brings extensive coaching experience, having managed PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and Antwerp, where he guided the club to its first Belgian league title in 66 years before leaving in 2024.

Belgian football officials said they chose Van Bommel for his international experience and ambition, believing he can help the “Red Devils” continue to improve and reach their full potential.
