Japanese media announced that the contract will run until the conclusion of the AFC Asian Cup, which Saudi Arabia will host from January 7 to February 5, 2027.

Departure after the Asian Cup

Reports, citing the Japan Football Association, said Moriyasu will step down after the tournament regardless of Japan’s results, with current Japan Under-23 coach Go Oiwa set to succeed him.

Japan's longest-serving national team coach

Moriyasu is Japan’s longest-serving national team manager, having taken charge following the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The 57-year-old led Japan to memorable victories over Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup before the team was eliminated by Croatia on penalties in the Round of 16.

He also guided Japan to the Round of 32 at this year’s World Cup in North America, where the team exited after conceding a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 defeat to Brazil.

Extensive international experience

Moriyasu has also coached Japan in two AFC Asian Cup tournaments, the Copa América, and the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, where the team finished fourth.

Japan have been drawn in Group F of the AFC Asian Cup alongside defending champions Qatar, Thailand and Indonesia.
