Sharjah 24: Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced the resignation of Ronald Koeman from his position as head coach of the national team following their elimination by Morocco on penalties in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Koeman, who was reappointed as coach of the "Oranje" (Netherlands national football team) in January 2023, wrote on his Instagram account: "Last night, I made the decision to end my tenure as head coach of the ‌Dutch national team."

The dream that didn’t come true

Koeman added, "I leave with mixed feelings. Of course, I had hoped to end my time with the national team by winning the World Cup, but that dream has not been realised."

The Netherlands began their North American World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against Japan, but finished top of Group F after victories over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1).

They were on course for the Round of 16 in Monterrey before Issa Diop equalised for Morocco in the first minute of stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time and a penalty shootout, where the Dutch missed three penalties.
