"La Roja" raised its points tally to seven, leading the group, four points ahead of Cape Verde, which made history by qualifying for the knockout stages in its first-ever World Cup appearance. Cape Verde finished second with three points from three draws, while Uruguay exited the cup early, managing only two points, ahead of bottom-placed Saudi Arabia on goal difference. 

Coach Luis de la Fuente's team owes its victory to Álex Baena's goal (42nd minute). Spain will avoid facing Argentina in the Round of 32 and will instead face either Austria or Algeria.

Two-time world champions Uruguay became the highest-ranked team (16th) to be eliminated from the group stage.
