The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that Wesley has been removed from the 2026 World Cup squad due to injury.
The 22-year-old Roma player sustained the injury during Brazil's 2-1 friendly win over Egypt on Saturday. He left the pitch in tears after being hurt during the match.
Ederson, the 26-year-old Atalanta midfielder, has been selected to replace Wesley in the squad. His last three appearances for Brazil were in March 2025.
In a statement, the Brazilian Football Confederation said: “The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that player Wesley underwent a further assessment by the Brazilian national team's medical staff on Sunday and imaging examinations.”
The statement added: “The MRI scan revealed a muscle injury to the adductor muscle of the left thigh.”
It continued: “In light of this diagnosis, the Brazilian Football Confederation announces the call-up of player Ederson, who will join the national team delegation in the United States on Monday.”
Five-time world champions Brazil will begin their tournament campaign against Morocco on Saturday, then face Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
