It also involved the installation of 119 kilometres of new cables, in addition to carrying out all technical works and electrical connections required to ensure optimal lighting performance throughout the tunnels. This initiative comes as part of SEWA’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and improve energy efficiency across the emirate’s road network.
Engineer Saud Abdulaziz, Director of the Khorfakkan Department at SEWA, explained that an integrated tunnel-lighting control system was installed in accordance with the latest international specifications and approved technical standards.
The system was distributed across 10 electrical rooms, housing both general lighting and emergency lighting systems. In total, the project covered tunnel sections spanning 13.22 kilometres.
He added that project works began at the start of 2024 and were completed on 25 October 2025. The project included design, engineering, procurement, supply and installation stages, all executed across six consecutive phases according to the approved schedule and in full compliance with technical specifications and energy-efficiency requirements.
Engineer Saud Abdulaziz noted that this project aligns with SEWA’s strategic plans to support the transition toward smarter and more efficient road networks. These efforts aim to enhance quality of life and promote sustainable development across the various cities and regions of the emirate.
