Children participate in “Bonsai Tree” workshop at SIBF

Simple materials teach valuable life lessons

The activity was an imaginative exploration of how simple materials can teach valuable life lessons. Each participant received a small model resembling a skeletal bonsai tree. Clusters of aluminium wires were twisted together and fixed to a wooden base, evoking a leafless autumn tree.

“The children have to carefully bend each of these wires to shape their tree,” explained instructor Shela Turiano. “It requires patience and a gentle touch. Each model has about twelve to fifteen wires. They are then given green foam balls and shredded paper. The paper is glued to the base to resemble moss, while the foam balls form the leaves.”

She added: “Our aim is to help children appreciate nature while practising patience and creativity. These two qualities are essential for healthy growth.”

Letting imagination take root

As the session unfolded, the tables came alive with quiet focus and laughter. Some children followed the guidance step-by-step, while others took creative liberty. One participant, Ahmed, proudly introduced his creation: “This tree is from Mars,” he said with a smile.

“That’s exactly the point,” said Turiano. “It’s not about rules; it’s about letting imagination take root.”

The Bonsai Tree activity is among the many screen-free workshops at SIBF 2025, giving children a space to learn, play, and connect through shared curiosity. Beyond its literary showcase, SIBF has evolved into a dynamic cultural festival celebrating storytelling in all its forms from the written word to visual and experiential creativity.

Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), this year’s fair marks one of its largest editions yet, welcoming readers and visitors of all ages.
