The Sharjah International Book Fair began its 44th edition on November 5th and runs until November 16th, with the Emirates Copyright Association taking an active role throughout the event.

Establishing a culture of respect for intellectual property

Through a dedicated pavilion, the Association is presenting its initiatives to protect authors’ and publishers’ rights. It highlights ongoing efforts to foster a culture of respect for intellectual property across the cultural and creative sectors.

Developing the creative economy

The Association uses the global platform of the book fair to underline the critical role of copyright in developing the creative economy. Visitors, including writers and publishers, are invited to join the Association, access its services, and benefit from its expertise. This approach reinforces the Association’s role as an active partner in supporting cultural industries, empowering creators, and promoting a knowledge-based, innovative, and responsible ecosystem in the UAE.

Dialogue session and specialised workshop for rights holders

As part of its participation, the Association is hosting a dialogue session and a specialized workshop for rights holders. These sessions aim to increase awareness of rights management mechanisms, strategies for protecting works in digital and educational contexts, and opportunities for future cooperation with cultural institutions to safeguard intellectual property.

Raising community awareness of the importance of respecting copyright

Majd Al Shehhi, Director of the Emirates Copyright Management Association, stressed that the Association’s participation in the Sharjah International Book Fair demonstrates its commitment to protecting creators’ rights. She emphasized raising community awareness about the importance of respecting copyright while promoting innovation and transparency in the publishing industry.

A strategic platform for connecting with publishers

Al Shehhi noted that the book fair provides a strategic platform to connect with publishers, creators, and readers, exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and highlight initiatives supporting authors and publishers. She added, “We hope this participation will act as a catalyst for strong, integrated partnerships that sustainably serve the cultural community.”

Awareness workshop

The Association is organizing a workshop titled “Copyright in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – From Challenges to Solutions.” The session will explore AI’s impact on copyright and intellectual property, addressing the challenges creators face with content generation technologies. It will also examine how modern laws and regulations can balance innovation with protecting creators’ rights and discuss legal and technical tools to safeguard authors’ intellectual output.

Transformations in copyright protection

A dialogue session titled “Transformations in Copyright Protection – From Traditional Publishing to the Digital Environment” will highlight key changes in copyright protection. The discussion will cover the shift from print publishing to digital platforms and AI-generated content. The session will also examine the role of collective management organizations in keeping pace with technology, protecting creators’ rights, securing sustainable financial returns, and fostering a supportive creative environment.

Building an advanced cultural ecosystem
