Atletico Madrid claim valuable away win over Real Betis

The win lifted Atletico to 19 points in fourth place, though they remain eight points behind city rivals Real Madrid, who extended their lead at the top to five points over Barcelona after a 2–1 El Clásico triumph at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.

Atletico bounce back strongly

After a heavy 0–4 Champions League defeat to Arsenal midweek, Atletico responded with a strong display, settling the match in the first half.
Argentine forward Giuliano Simeone, son of coach Diego Simeone, opened the scoring in the third minute with a shot from the edge of the area, before Álex Baena added the second with a curling effort in first-half stoppage time.

It was Atletico’s first away victory of the season, owed largely to Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who produced several key saves as Betis dominated the second half.
