Sharjah 24 – AFP: Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will step down as Bayer Leverkusen coach after the current season, amid reports linking him to Real Madrid.

Future role unconfirmed

Alonso called it "the right moment" to announce his departure but declined to confirm his next job.

Linked to Real Madrid

Media reports suggest Alonso will take over at Real Madrid after the Club World Cup, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, with a €12 million compensation to Leverkusen.

Historic success at Leverkusen

Appointed in October 2022, Alonso led Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title and an unbeaten domestic double in 2023–24.

Final Games and Farewell

Alonso will coach his final home match against Dortmund and finish the season away at Mainz. He thanked club leadership, staff, and fans for their support during a “historic” journey.
