Sharjah24 - AFP: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the western Turkish town of Sindirgi late Monday, marking the second powerful tremor to hit the area in less than three months, authorities said. The quake occurred at 10:48 p.m. local time (19:48 GMT) and was felt across major cities including Istanbul and Izmir, according to Turkey’s disaster management agency AFAD.

No casualties reported but buildings collapsed

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed there were no casualties, though several structures previously damaged in earlier quakes gave way. “Three buildings and a store that had been evacuated after the last quake collapsed, but there are no victims,” Yerlikaya said.

Region prone to deadly quakes

Sindirgi, located about 138 kilometers northeast of Izmir, was previously struck by a similar 6.1-magnitude quake on August 10, which killed one person and injured dozens. Turkey sits on multiple active fault lines, making it one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions. The devastating February 2023 earthquake in the southwest killed more than 53,000 people, while a 5.8-magnitude tremor in July 2025 left one dead and 69 injured.
