The MoU was signed at the academy's headquarters in Khorfakkan by Dr Hashem Al Zaabi, Director of the Sharjah Maritime Academy, and Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai, as well as several academic leaders from both institutions.
The memorandum details the creation of collaborative programs for faculty qualification and training, joint research supervision, academic exchange, and the implementation of scientific and research initiatives. These projects are intended to promote the UAE's national objectives in the areas of innovation, education quality, and collaboration with critical sectors, in keeping with the country's vision of a knowledge-based economy.

He stated that collaboration with Heriot-Watt University, an internationally renowned academic institution, boosts the Academy's efforts to train skilled national cadres with knowledge, competence, and leadership abilities to serve the marine sector in the UAE and the wider region.
According to Professor Heather McGregor, this relationship brings together the strengths of both institutions to foster cooperative research, faculty collaboration, and professional development, which is consistent with the UAE's strategy for long-term, knowledge-driven growth. She went on to say that the institution is excited to continue growing and expanding this cooperation to achieve beneficial outcomes for students, faculty, and the community at large.
