Sharjah24: The Sharjah Fish Resources Authority (SFRA) held a meeting chaired by His Excellency Salem Mohammed Al Mehrzi, Director of the Authority, with the Khorfakkan Cooperative Society for Fishermen. The discussion focused on key issues affecting the fishing sector in Khorfakkan, particularly the regulation of the traditional “Daghwa” fishing method. The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Khorfakkan Cooperative Society for Fishermen, as well as several officials from both the Authority and the Cooperative.

Balancing tradition and sustainability

During the meeting, participants discussed the impact of “daghwa” fishing on the marine environment and the sustainability of fish stocks. They explored ways to regulate this traditional fishing method to ensure a balance between preserving maritime heritage and protecting fish resources from depletion. Opinions were exchanged on best practices for controlling fishing schedules and licenses, supporting fishermen while safeguarding the marine ecosystem.

Ongoing collaboration for sustainable fisheries

His Excellency Salem Mohammed Al Mehrzi emphasised the importance of continued coordination and cooperation with the Khorfakkan Cooperative Society for Fishermen to meet the aspirations of local fishermen and regulate traditional fishing practices sustainably. He underscored the Authority’s commitment to preserving marine resources to ensure long-term sustainability for future generations.
