Sharjah 24: Professor Dr Pamela Beach, Associate Dean at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), USA, presented her research on inclusive practices and assistive technology for people with visual impairments (VIP) at the Khorfakkan International Scientific Conference for Persons with Disabilities and Adapted Physical Education.

Dr Beach noted that her team has been researching the demands and barriers encountered by trained orientation and mobility professionals. Building on this research, they created a simulator to help visually impaired people improve their cane and navigation skills. The simulator uses colour contrast, audio, and haptic input to improve mobility training.

Ac Young people with visual impairments have already tested the technology, providing insights into their experiences and perspectives, according to Dr Beach. He noted that the project's next phase will focus on refining the technology and developing new assessment tools.

Reflecting on the meeting, Dr Beach hailed it as "an incredible experience", underlining the need for exchanging ideas with professionals from all around the world, particularly from the MENA region.
