The workshop, organised by the College of Communication, hosted His Excellency Mohammed Abdullah Al Qaid Al Hammadi, Board Member and Acting Executive Director of Sharjah’s Al Thiqah Club for Disabled.
He shared the club’s pioneering journey since its inception and its objectives in empowering members to actively participate in sports, cultural, and social activities.
Al Hammadi also highlighted community and media partnerships that have showcased the club’s achievements locally and regionally, emphasising the complementary roles of educational and media institutions in supporting issues affecting people with disabilities.
The workshop covered several core topics, including the support of visionary leadership for the rights and empowerment of people with disabilities, the role of media in raising public awareness, and the challenges journalists face in this field. Al Thiqah Club was presented as an inspiring local example of empowerment and rehabilitation. Participants also explored effective media strategies leveraging multimedia formats such as video, infographics, and podcasts to deliver engaging, comprehensive content, alongside legal and rights frameworks based on international agreements, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Dr Bassam Al Makawi, Acting Dean of Academic Support Services, delivered a presentation showcasing a visual study titled “The reality of Emirati news sites using assistive technologies to enhance media access for people with disabilities.” He emphasised that this approach reflects the commitment of media institutions to keep pace with technological advancement and utilise its tools to serve all members of society.
The workshop also featured inspiring stories and successful experiences of people with disabilities, with UAE media playing a prominent role in highlighting their achievements.
His Excellency Professor Hisham Abbas, Dean of the College of Communication, noted that issues concerning people with disabilities represent a humanitarian and societal priority. Through this workshop, the college aims to prepare a generation of media professionals capable of covering these topics with high professionalism, while adhering to ethical and humanitarian standards that promote a positive, supportive portrayal, empower this community, and highlight their talents. The workshop was moderated by Dr Amr Abdelhamid, Associate Professor at the College of Communication, who stressed that the media’s role goes beyond news coverage to contribute to a strong societal awareness of the rights of people with disabilities, sharing success stories to reinforce values of equality and inclusion.
At the conclusion of the event, Professor Hisham Abbas honoured participants in recognition of their contributions and outstanding efforts in supporting people with disabilities, praising the workshop for adding significant practical and knowledge-based value for media students.
