Sharjah 24: In a spectacular milestone adding to its legacy of scientific and environmental achievements, Sharjah safari—the largest of its kind outside Africa and a flagship destination under the Environment and Protected Areas Authority—opened its fifth season today, 22 September, with two truly unique events: the birth of its fifth African savannah elephant and the arrival of ring-tailed lemur twins, native to Madagascar and listed globally as endangered.

Sharjah safari rises as a global hub for conservation and education
The arrival of the newborn elephant marks a major highlight in Sharjah safari’s breeding programmes. The African savannah elephant, the largest land mammal on Earth, is a powerful symbol of African wildlife. Veterinary and nutrition teams monitored both mother and calf meticulously from birth until they were fully stable, showcasing the highest standards of professional, specialised, and integrated care.

Meanwhile, the birth of the ring-tailed lemur twins represents a rare scientific achievement. Known for their unique social behaviour and remarkable use of their striped tails for balance and communication, these lemurs add significant value to Sharjah safari’s ongoing conservation efforts. These births strengthen the safari’s contribution to global initiatives aimed at protecting endangered species.

184 new bird and mammal births recorded in Q2 2025
Sharjah safari also celebrated the arrival of 184 new birds and mammals in the second quarter of 2025. This impressive number reflects the creation of fully enriched natural habitats and adherence to the highest veterinary care standards. With these new additions, the total number of species at the safari rose to 151, including giraffes, lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, and rare birds—demonstrating a balanced ecosystem that faithfully mirrors African wildlife.

Sharjah’s global leadership in biodiversity and wildlife protection
Her Excellency Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), affirmed that these achievements embody the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to position the emirate as a global hub for biodiversity and wildlife preservation. She highlighted that these new births carry immense scientific and environmental significance, extending Sharjah’s role as a leading international destination for endangered species conservation. They also reflect the strategic efforts of the authority to enhance ecosystem sustainability and offer an inspiring model for wildlife protection.

A leading platform for education and research
Al Suwaidi added: “This new season offers visitors an extraordinary experience reminiscent of the African wilderness. Expansive natural habitats allow guests to witness rare births up close, including the newborn elephant and ring-tailed lemur twins—moments filled with awe and inspiration. Sharjah safari is more than a leisure destination; it is a pioneering educational and research platform. Children, students, and families can experience the beauty of wildlife firsthand, engaging with educational programmes that emphasise the importance of environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. The interactive safari tours combine fun and learning, instilling values of sustainability and environmental responsibility, and inspiring visitors to actively contribute to nature preservation for future generations.”
