Carr emphasised the crucial role that communities play in welcoming individuals with intellectual disabilities. He highlighted that fostering such inclusivity encourages individuals to seek employment and become fully integrated members of society.

The economic importance of diversity

Carr highlighted the economic, financial, and social benefits of vibrant communities. “The most diverse communities are the most productive and profitable,” he said. He stressed that narrowing the inclusion gap can have significant positive effects on community dynamics.

Early childhood education: A key focus

Carr's passion lies in promoting inclusive education from early childhood, advocating that all children learn together. He shared his experiences in New Brunswick, where he implemented progressive policies to foster inclusivity from a young age through high school and into the workforce.

Creating pathways to employment

“To achieve inclusive workplaces, we must start early,” Carr noted. He explained that fostering diversity in education leads to a more capable workforce, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole. “Communities with diverse workplaces are not only more profitable but also more socially vibrant and productive,” he concluded.

A call for continued advocacy

The congress serves as a crucial platform for discussions on inclusion and aims to inspire actionable change. With leaders like Jody Carr advocating for inclusive education and community engagement, the event is set to make significant strides toward a more inclusive future for individuals with disabilities.
