The months of July and August saw several heat warnings across the country. According to data from the Death Certificates Information System (SICO), there were 20 consecutive days of excess mortality, representing a 25% increase in deaths during this period.
The 75+ age group was most impacted due to increased vulnerability. Of the 34 days with excess mortality in July and August, 29 days showed a spike in deaths among those over 70.
The Directorate-General for Health (DGS) stated that while excess deaths occurred nationwide, northern, central, and Alentejo regions were especially affected.
Authorities cited dehydration and exacerbation of chronic conditions, especially cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as key factors in the spike in deaths among vulnerable populations.
The month of July was especially severe, with two significant heat spells from 1–9 July and 25–31 July, contributing substantially to the overall excess mortality.
