Sharjah 24 – AFP: FIFA announced that the Women’s World Cup will expand to 48 teams starting in 2031, matching the men’s format.

Format and match increase

The tournament will adopt a 12-group format, increasing matches from 64 to 104 and extending the event by one week.

Expansion follows 2023 success

FIFA President Gianni Infantino cited the success of the 2023 edition, saying the move will help more nations develop women’s football.

Hosting plans for 2031 and 2035

The US is the sole bidder for 2031, while the UK is bidding for 2035. The 2027 tournament in Brazil will keep the current 32-team format.

New Anti-racism and support measures

FIFA also approved tougher anti-racism rules and support for Afghan women footballers, including forming a refugee team.
