Sharjah 24: Aisha Obaid Ghabesh, Director of Events at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH), announced the launch of a series of community initiatives titled “Intergenerational Gathering”, held at the Institute on April 23–24.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s celebrations of the “Year of Community” and targets senior citizens through interactive, heritage-based programmes that aim to strengthen bonds between generations. The initiative is organised in collaboration with Al Asala Club and the Senior Citizens Services Centre.

Empowering Seniors through Cultural Exchange

Speaking to “Sharjah 24,” Ghabesh emphasised that the initiative seeks to promote community inclusion for senior citizens while highlighting their vital role in passing on cultural and traditional knowledge to younger generations. Supported by the Ministry of Community Empowerment, the programmes aim to create a meaningful exchange rooted in shared heritage.

Focus on Marine Heritage

The first day of the initiative focused on marine environments, featuring workshops and educational discussions about the components of traditional maritime life and its historical importance for coastal communities. Live demonstrations of maritime arts and related traditional crafts were also showcased, offering participants an immersive cultural experience.

Women's Dialogue and Artistic Exchange

On the second day, the initiative continues with dialogue sessions specifically for female members of Al Asala Club. These sessions feature a variety of artistic and educational activities that encourage cultural interaction across generations and reinforce heritage as a bridge connecting the past with the present.

Fostering Social Cohesion through Heritage

Concluding her statement, Ghabesh stated that “Intergenerational Gathering” reflects the vision of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage to build a cohesive society by embedding traditional values and fostering social integration across all community segments. Senior citizens, she noted, are the nation’s living memory and a symbol of its enduring contribution.
