The opening ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an. Professor Hamid Majul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, delivered a welcome address in which he extended gratitude to the Deputy Ruler for his continuous support of the university’s activities, which he said has enabled its consistent academic and scientific excellence.
Al Nuaimi underscored the significance of the conference and its objectives in advancing scientific research, explaining that the university follows strategic plans in organising international conferences that engage with contemporary issues, contribute to shaping a better future for humanity, and examine intellectual and civilisational impacts.
The chancellor also highlighted the university’s distinguished global standing, noting its high rankings in international indices. “The University of Sharjah ranked 67th globally and first nationally in the field of sustainability,” he said. “It also secured 53rd place worldwide and first locally in research quality. These achievements would not have been possible without the constant support and visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, who consistently provides the generosity and open-mindedness that smooths our path and fulfils our goals.”
He concluded by thanking the sponsors, guests, and esteemed scholars participating in the conference from various countries.
Leading scholars discuss the Qur’an’s higher objectives
Sheikh Dr Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, Advisor at the Saudi Royal Court and Imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, praised the conference and its theme, which addresses the higher objectives of the Qur’an rooted in monotheism, worship, justice, mercy, and the safeguarding of human dignity. These principles, he noted, are exemplified in the preservation of the five essential needs in Islam, the purification of the soul, and its spiritual elevation.
He emphasised the importance of scholarly effort in studying the Qur’an, specialising in its sciences, and delving deeply into its higher purposes. These objectives, he stated, reveal the truths, values, and meanings of Islam, and serve as a guide to its wisdom and ultimate aims. The Qur’an’s objectives, he added, aim to fulfil the servitude to God and serve the interests of humanity in both this life and the hereafter.
Dr Bin Humaid concluded by highlighting the fundamental role of Qur’anic studies in shaping Islamic identity and instilling spiritual and ethical values. He stressed that educational institutions should not merely teach Qur’anic texts but should actively implement its teachings in the lives of individuals and communities, requiring both a deep understanding of its objectives and practical methods to realise them in reality.
Sheikh Dr Mohammed Al-Duwaini, Deputy of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, addressed the scholarly interpretations and reflections on the objectives of the Qur’an. He stated that the most relevant interpretations concern the major themes and general issues addressed by Qur’anic verses. He argued that the objectives lie beyond the topics themselves and reside in the goals and wisdom for which the Qur’an was revealed.
He emphasised that combining foundation—understanding the objectives deeply—and implementation—applying them effectively—is the path to reviving the message of the Holy Qur’an.
Al-Duwaini also spoke about the importance of understanding the Qur’an’s aims, as it offers solutions to contemporary challenges and remedies for spiritual and intellectual ailments. He affirmed that the Qur’an serves as a reminder of the Islamic nation’s deep-rooted identity and moral principles, and that its teachings call the Ummah to a life of knowledge and righteous action.

At the conclusion of the opening ceremony, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi honoured the keynote speakers and sponsors from various institutions.
