Sharjah24: On the occasion of Sharjah hosting the World University Powerlifting Championship in August 2026, Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council, welcomed a delegation from the International University Sports Federation. The delegation included Raymond Matthias, Secretary-General of the Federation; Ali Masri Al-Dhaheri, Executive Board Member; and Imad Bounouch, Regional Representative of the Federation for the Middle East. The meeting was attended by Eid Kanaan, Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Sharjah, and Ibrahim Saif, Head of the Sports Professional Department at the Sports Affairs and Development Administration of the Council. They discussed ways to cooperate between the two sides and the arrangements for hosting the prestigious championship, which will be sponsored by the Council.
Praise for local and international efforts
Following the meeting, Al Hazami praised the efforts and initiatives of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, both locally and internationally in sports and non-sports fields. He affirmed that the University of Sharjah reflects the emirate's culture and vision through its international activities and events. He assured that Sharjah will continue its tradition of hosting global championships and events, providing the World Powerlifting Championship and its participants with all guarantees for organizational and technical success. He welcomed cooperation with the International University Sports Federation, while the Secretary-General of the Federation commended the sports infrastructure in Sharjah in general and the facilities and stadiums of the University of Sharjah in particular.
University of Sharjah's successful bid
The University of Sharjah won the right to host and organise the World Powerlifting Championship 2026 after its bid outperformed competitors. Recently, the Secretary-General of the Federation and his accompanying delegation handed over the championship flag to Professor Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah.
