An AFP photographer in Sanaa heard three explosions and saw plumes of smoke coming from a residential district in the north of the city. Security forces quickly cordoned off the area. According to the Houthis' health and environment ministry, nine civilians were killed, and nine others, most seriously injured, were also reported.
The Houthis' Al-Masirah TV station described the strikes as an "American-British aggression" targeting the Shuub district, a residential area in Sanaa. No immediate comment was given by British authorities.
In response to the attacks, President Trump posted on social media, vowing to "use overwhelming lethal force" until the US achieves its objectives, citing the Houthis' threats to Red Sea shipping lanes.
The Houthis, who have controlled much of Yemen for over a decade, are part of the "axis of resistance" comprising pro-Iran groups. These groups are staunchly opposed to Israel and the US. The rebels have launched numerous drone and missile attacks targeting ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, claiming solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza conflict. Their campaign has severely disrupted global shipping, forcing companies to reroute their vessels around the tip of southern Africa.
In response to the Houthis’ actions, the US has conducted multiple rounds of strikes against Houthi targets, some with British support. After pausing their attacks during the Gaza ceasefire in January, the Houthis recently threatened to resume hostilities unless Israel lifts the blockade on aid to Palestine.
