United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres speaks during a press briefing
Sharjah 24 – KUNA: In a message marking Saturday's International Day to Combat Islamophobia, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned about the alarming rise of hatred towards Islam. He stressed the importance of adhering to fundamental values such as equality and human rights.

Impact on Muslims during Ramadan

Guterres highlighted the plight of many Muslims who experience fear, discrimination, isolation, and violence, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. He condemned the manifestation of fanaticism, policies that violate human rights and dignity, and the recurring attacks on vulnerable and sectarian communities.

Call to renounce extremism and protect religious freedoms

The UN chief urged governments to combat extremism, renounce fanaticism, and protect religious freedoms. He emphasised the need to reject racial profiling and discriminatory policies that violate human rights, as well as to prevent violence against individuals and places of worship.

Global effort to tackle intolerance and bigotry

Guterres also spoke about the broader issue of intolerance and extremist ideologies, warning that when one group is attacked, the rights and freedoms of all are at risk. He called on the global community to reject bigotry, speak out against xenophobia and discrimination, and foster social cohesion. Additionally, he urged online platforms to curb hate speech and harassment.
