Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) welcomed a delegation from the Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD) to establish a technical partnership and enhance cooperation in defining and classifying economic data. The collaboration aims to improve data quality and accuracy, enabling the emirate to conduct precise economic surveys and inquiries across various companies and institutions, ultimately supporting sustainable economic development.

Commitment to data-driven decision making

Commenting on the initiative, HE Fahad Ahmed Al Khamiri, SEDD Director, highlighted the importance of collaboration with relevant entities in Sharjah, particularly DSCD, in strengthening the emirate’s statistical and economic data capabilities. He reaffirmed SEDD’s commitment to working closely with DSCD to enhance data collection on businesses and economic establishments, improving the accuracy of economic analysis. This, in turn, will support informed economic decision-making, provide periodic insights into company outputs and investor needs, and enhance the overall customer experience—key priorities guided by the esteemed Executive Council under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of the Executive Council.

Impact on economic growth and market efficiency

Al Khamiri further noted that the outcomes of this collaboration would soon be reflected in reports and data exchanges between the two entities, contributing to greater market efficiency and directing investments toward high-potential sectors. This will bolster the emirate’s GDP and reinforce its economic standing.

He also emphasised that SEDD is actively classifying economic data, conducting periodic evaluations of the economic landscape, and monitoring the life cycle of companies and establishments. These efforts aim to generate accurate, data-driven insights that enhance the investment climate and improve efficiency in assessing corporate productivity, ultimately benefiting the emirate’s GDP. Additionally, SEDD is committed to strengthening the methodology of data collection and classification to align with international best practices, ensuring a reliable foundation for economic planning and forecasting.

Standardising statistical methodologies

Meanwhile, Abdullah Al Kadid Al Mahrazi, Director of the Statistics Department at DSCD, stressed the importance of statistical maturity in data, stating that leveraging government records as primary information sources is essential. He underscored the need for standardised statistical methodologies and unified economic classifications to facilitate integration between relevant stakeholders and maximise the emirate’s economic benefits. He further noted that accurate and comprehensive data is a cornerstone of effective policy formulation and economic development, contributing to a more transparent and efficient business environment.

Developing accurate economic indicators

Al Mahrazi also highlighted the necessity of adhering to the economic classification of activities to accurately gauge the true size of Sharjah’s economy across various sectors. This adherence plays a crucial role in developing precise economic indicators and informing policy decisions. He pointed out that economic classifications must be periodically reviewed and updated to reflect the evolving economic landscape and ensure relevance in decision-making processes.

Enhancing capabilities for economic surveys

In this context, both parties agreed to enhance human, logistical, and technical capabilities to support the annual economic survey, statistical studies, and the preparation of indicators that reflect economic realities. Additionally, SEDD reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of economic establishment data in line with legal provisions governing its operations. The department will continue to work on strengthening data security protocols and ensuring that information is used exclusively for analytical and developmental purposes.

Conclusion and future prospects

Concluding the meeting, Al Mahrazi commended SEDD’s pivotal role in facilitating business operations in the emirate and its continuous support for the private sector. He acknowledged SEDD’s contributions to fostering a thriving business environment that drives economic growth and development in Sharjah. He expressed optimism that the collaboration between SEDD and DSCD will serve as a model for integrating statistical and economic efforts, ultimately reinforcing Sharjah’s position as a leading economic hub in the region.
