The first well-rehearsed ceremony took place in Rafah, where Hamas fighters handed over hostages Tal Shoham and Avera Mengistu to the Red Cross. The men, appearing disoriented, were provided certificates in Hebrew marking the end of their captivity before being transported by the Red Cross.
Later, in Nuseirat, three hostages—Eliya Cohen, Omer Shem Tuv, and Omer Wenkret—appeared on stage, smiling and waving at a cheering crowd. Shem Tuv, abducted from a music festival on October 7, was seen blowing kisses and kissing his captors.
Throughout the ceremonies, Hamas militants displayed their strength, holding weapons such as Kalashnikovs and rocket launchers. Banners bearing slogans and images of fallen commanders, including Muhammad Deif, were shown as part of the event.
The slogans referenced Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, the attack that began the ongoing Gaza war, and other war-related imagery. Hamas used the occasion to send a message of resistance and power, highlighting the continuing conflict and their resolve.
While five hostages were released, 62 others remain in captivity, with some presumed dead, as Israel's military confirmed the release of a sixth hostage, Hisham al-Sayed.
