Sharjah 24: In the presence of Sheikh Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, His Excellency Dr Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, His Excellency Dr Mohammed Abdullah bin Huwaiden Al Ketbi, Chairman of Al Dhaid Municipal Council, and His Excellency Hamad Rashid Al Tunaiji, Director of Al Dhaid City Municipality, the Sharjah Institute for Heritage inaugurated the 22nd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days in Al Dhaid. This marks the festival’s fifth stop in Sharjah Emirate, following its celebrations in Sharjah city, Kalba, Mleiha, and Al Hamriyah.

Opening celebrations at Al Dhaid Fort

The festival’s opening was a vibrant celebration, with the rhythmic beats of drums and traditional chants filling the courtyards of Al Dhaid Fort, one of Sharjah’s most prominent heritage landmarks. Enthusiastic performers showcased Al-Azi and Al-Razfa dances, creating a festive atmosphere amid a distinguished presence of government officials and local dignitaries. The events commenced with poetic recitations and national anthems, celebrating the UAE, its leadership, its people, and their enduring cultural heritage.

Emphasising Al Dhaid’s cultural significance

On this occasion, His Excellency Dr Abdul Aziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, emphasised Al Dhaid’s deep-rooted cultural significance, stating:
"Al Dhaid holds a special place in our local heritage, preserved and passed down through generations by its proud people. Their commitment to heritage reflects the city’s deep appreciation for tradition, its strong sense of identity, and its ability to captivate. In addition to its historical richness, the city is known for its unparalleled hospitality and warm reception."

Traditional exhibitions and cultural activities

The festival featured an array of traditional exhibitions and activities, including an authentic handicraft market with skilled artisans, a museum showcasing antique weapons, and another exhibit highlighting Bedouin life through interactive displays. A heritage wall featuring proverbs and folk wisdom, as well as a marine heritage corner, further enriched the cultural experience. These exhibits vividly reflected the values of ‘Sana’ (traditional etiquette and customs), enhancing the festival’s charm with the diverse beauty of Emirati traditional attire.

Heritage performances and interactive workshops

Al Dhaid Fort’s courtyard was adorned with additional heritage-inspired performances, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s diverse cultural landscapes. The festival also featured interactive workshops, aimed at engaging children and young visitors, ensuring that heritage remains alive in the hearts of future generations. The enthusiasm of attendees, including visitors and dignitaries, underscored the success of this year’s edition and the festival’s growing impact.
