Abu Dhabi kicks off the sporting season
Abu Dhabi started the month by hosting the 16th edition of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit. The event attracted millions of viewers globally, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a premier sports destination. The Emirate also hosted other major events, including the 6th ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, the 2024 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, the World Tennis League, and the Asian Chess Championship.
Sharjah hosts thrilling motorsports and equestrian events
Sharjah also played a significant role in the UAE's December sporting calendar. The Sharjah Grand Prix, the final round of the 23rd season of the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship at Khalid Lagoon, drew 19 top drivers, creating an exciting atmosphere and boosting the region’s tourism. Additionally, the 6th Sharjah Kalba Arabian Horse Festival, organised by the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club, showcased 242 horses from stables and clubs across the country.
Dubai’s role in global sports excellence
Dubai has been central in hosting several significant sporting events, such as the inaugural Sport Impact Summit (SIS) 2024, which brought together 200 key figures in sports decision-making. Other major events in Dubai included the 2024 Dubai Fitness Championship, the Dubai World Obstacle Championship, the Dubai Grand Prix for XCAT Powerboats, and the Artistic Swimming World League, featuring 15 participating countries.
The city also hosted the Sir Churchill Polo Cup at the Al Habtoor Polo Club, a key event in preparation for the Dubai Silver Cup. Two major events wrapping up the month will be the Dubai International Sports Conference and the Globe Soccer Dubai Awards 2024, scheduled for December 27th.
Community and cultural sports events in the UAE
The First Salam Cycling Race, one of the largest community sports championships, will take place on December 29th in Dubai, promoting community sports and highlighting Dubai’s natural landmarks.
Additionally, the Liwa International Festival in the Al Dhafra region, running from December 13th to January 4th, has become a significant winter destination for traditional sports, motorsport enthusiasts, and camping lovers, attracting participants from around the world.
