Sharjah 24: As part of the 11th edition of the Sharjah Calligraphy Forum, titled "Taraqeem," organised by the Cultural Affairs Division of the Sharjah Department of Culture, an artistic workshop titled “Taraqeem Hurufiya” was held yesterday, Wednesday, at the Emirates Association for Fine Arts. The workshop was supervised by Professor Hossam Abdel Wahab and attended by a number of artists and enthusiasts of this ancient art form, who learned how to use modern design applications to enhance the quality of their artistic work without compromising its essence or the unique creative touch of the artist.
At the beginning of the workshop, Abdel Wahab introduced attendees to the concept of "Taraqeem Hurufiya" (the use of dots and symbols in texts) and highlighted the importance of typographic punctuation in improving the quality of written texts, as well as the modern tools and applications used to facilitate and regulate the punctuation process.
Abdel Wahab worked on a direct practical model of "Taraqeem" written in Thuluth script, demonstrating how to extract geometric patterns commonly used by professional designers. He showcased the limitless shapes and possibilities provided by modern digital applications for modifying or enhancing work, along with colours that can be added to decorative elements to give the work a distinctive aesthetic dimension.
In conclusion, Abdel Wahab emphasised that while these digital techniques can enhance the quality of work, they can never compete with the personal touch of a calligrapher or artist. Instead, they serve as a supportive tool to reduce the time and effort spent on tasks. He reiterated that the true artistic value stems from the talent and techniques of the calligrapher in drawing letters and mastering the six known types of calligraphy. Therefore, technology can never replace the skilled hand and creative spirit of the artist.
