The workshop began by introducing the concept of digital safety, defined as a lifestyle and set of practices for safe interaction online, aimed at avoiding various digital threats, which could stem from human risks or technological challenges.
Jawaher Mohamed outlined essential steps to stay safe online, such as creating strong passwords, ensuring antivirus software is up to date, practicing safe browsing, protecting personal data, and making sure purchases are made from secure and trusted websites. She also emphasized being cautious about account hacking, staying alert to people met online, enabling all privacy settings on apps and devices, and being mindful of the information shared online. Additionally, participants were advised to verify the safety of downloaded files and to ensure a secure internet connection.
The session also touched on the "Digital Safety Initiative for Children and Families" launched by Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. This initiative aims to protect children, promote digital well-being, and raise awareness about minimizing digital risks while encouraging safe internet use among children.
The workshop concluded by discussing the negative impacts of digital technology, which can affect social relationships, lead to undesirable behaviors among youth and adolescents, and cause children to adopt improper study habits. Additionally, prolonged internet use has been linked to obesity, sleep disorders, anxiety, and eye strain due to constant exposure to screens.
