Sharjah 24: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD), Khorfakkan branch, has launched a new community initiative called “Caravan of Bayout Awal” (meaning "Homes of the Past"), aimed at enhancing family cohesion between grandparents and grandchildren.

Starting on the Day of Arafah, the initiative engaged 700 homes and community councils in reliving the traditional life of extended families, reviving the customs and traditions of past generations.

Reviving ancestral traditions through shared meals

Residents of the neighbourhood exchanged traditional dishes such as Harees, reflecting the old custom of neighbours sharing food. Children took part by delivering meals to nearby homes, reviving the spirit of neighbourly exchange that was common in their grandparents’ time.

Long-term social goals

Ahmed Nasser Al Naqbi, Director of the Khorfakkan branch, explained that the initiative will continue for three years, including four sub-initiatives. Its overall aim is to support family stability and social cohesion by building supportive social systems that revive ancestral traditions and familiarise grandchildren with their heritage, especially in a time where technology draws children away from their roots.

Bringing joy and a sense of community

Al Naqbi noted that “Caravan of Bayout Awal” seeks to restore the simple, joyful life of extended families and spread happiness throughout the neighbourhood. The primary participants are grandchildren who did not live in their grandparents’ era. Between 4 pm and 6 pm, children exchanged traditional dishes and Eid greetings, recreating a cherished custom of the past.

He also thanked the local residents for their enthusiasm, which brought back the warmth and close community spirit of ancestral times.
