Sharjah 24 – WAM: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, inaugurated the 10th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai.
Organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA), and the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO), this year’s summit is themed “Empowering Global Action: Unlocking Opportunities and Advancing Progress.” It is being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre and will run until October 3, 2024.

Surangel Whipps Jr., President of the Republic of Palau, emphasized the urgent need for collective action against climate change, stating that it poses a real and present danger. He highlighted the summit's role in fostering global cooperation and supporting nations like Palau in their sustainability efforts, noting that protecting the ocean is crucial for combating climate change.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, outlined the UAE's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. She discussed the UAE’s efforts to transition to a green economy and enhance global partnerships in addressing climate challenges, with a focus on food systems transformation.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of DEWA, expressed gratitude to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his support. He discussed the importance of a green economy and the need for innovative solutions to tackle climate challenges, citing the summit as a platform for dialogue among global experts.

Al Tayer highlighted the pivotal role of climate finance and the significant investments needed to achieve net-zero emissions. He pointed out that while progress is being made in renewable energy, global investments must increase to meet the necessary targets.

He noted the UAE's advancements in clean energy projects, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, and emphasized the importance of green hydrogen production in enhancing the UAE’s competitiveness in the market. The summit will also address the roles of youth and the pressing issues surrounding the food and water sectors.

Former Costa Rican President José María Figueres Olsen commended the UAE's leadership in renewable energy and highlighted Costa Rica’s successful conservation efforts as an example of how environmental and economic benefits can go hand in hand.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including government officials and global experts in energy, sustainability, and climate change, all eager to explore pathways to accelerate the transition to a sustainable green economy.
