Sharjah24: Sharjah Charity International (SCI) is currently accepting applications for its tenth mass wedding in the UAE, targeting young individuals with modest incomes who are considering marriage. This initiative follows the organisation's previous mass marriages.
According to Ali Mohammed Al Rashidi, the chairman of the mass wedding initiative, the web platform has already received over 100 applications and continues to accept new contributions. The goal is to have 150 participants, with an emphasis on low-income UAE nationals, children of Emirati mothers, decree holders, and residents who have made important contributions to the country.
Al Rashidi underlined that the mass wedding idea corresponds to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed, Member of Supreme Council Al Qasimi and Ruler of Sharjah, who originally called for mass weddings in 1990, making Sharjah the first in the Middle East to adopt the concept.
The project has since become a popular tradition, promoting family stability, encouraging low wedding expenses, and addressing the issue of large dowries.
He noted that Sharjah Charity International has staged countless mass weddings, which have benefitted many low-income young people in the UAE and other countries where the charity operates.
To be eligible, applicants must meet certain criteria, such as being a first-time groom, a UAE national or decree holder, or the child of an Emirati woman with a modest income. People who are supporting their families due to their father's death or incapacity receive exceptions. Participants must also attend mandatory awareness sessions sponsored by the charity.
Al Rashidi encouraged financially disadvantaged young people to apply via the organization's website or by calling the free hotline 80014.
