The United Arab Emirates (UAE) consistently demonstrates significant efforts to establish itself as a leading global tourism destinations, offering a wide array of services, activities, and diverse attractions.
Much like other emirates, Sharjah has successfully evolved into a prominent tourism and cultural destination over the years. It is dedicated to providing visitors with valuable insights into history, heritage, and authenticity, exemplified by its unique museums equipped to offer a comprehensive visiting experiences. Visitors are left with awe and contemplation by each of the 16 incredibly distinct museums.

Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi

Once serving as the residence and centre for governance affairs of His Highness Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi, a former ruler of Sharjah, this museum stands out as one of the emirate’s most exquisite heritage sites. Constructed between 1899 and 1901, this house showcases traditional UAE architecture. Renovated and inaugurated on December 5, 1999, it now serves as a museum, displaying authentic Emirati heritage items such as pottery, coins, and weaponry.

Visitors can experience the charm of old-house designs, room divisions, and contents, while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty of the nearby coast, verdant gardens, and mountain views.

Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi is located in Kalba, on the east coast of the Arabian Gulf, opposite Al Hisn (Kalba Fort). It welcomes visitors from Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Archaeology Museum

Built in 1993 and moved to its current location in 1997, Sharjah Archeology Museum transports visitors back thousands of years to early human life. It uncovers the ancient human habitation in Sharjah, dating back over 125,000 years. Traces of the earliest inhabitants in the region are showcased through its unique pieces and artefacts, including pottery, jewellery, and ancient weapons.

Visitors interested in educating their children can take them to this museum. Sharjah Museums Authority inaugurated a unique interactive hall in 2022, the first of its kind in interactive archaeology in the UAE’s museums. It enables children to learn about the archaeology of Sharjah in an interactive way through models, technologies, and activities.

The Sharjah Archaeology Museum is located in the Halwan district, next to the Sharjah Science Museum on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Road. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization houses over 5,000 unique archaeological pieces collected from various regions of the Islamic world. These pieces tell the story of the Islamic civilization and its greatness. The museum also informs visitors about the most prominent theories and discoveries pioneered by Muslim scientists in various fields.

Inaugurated in 1996, this museum consists of several sections, each showcasing a specific period in time. The Abu Bakr Gallery of Islamic Faith is dedicated to introducing the principles of Islam and the Holy Quran. It also defines the rituals of Hajj and Umrah through a distinctive display featuring a model of the Kaaba. Furthermore, it contains model figures and images of mosques from the Islamic world and Europe.

The Ibn Al-Haytham Gallery of Science and Technology showcases the achievements of Muslim scholars in various fields of science, such as astronomy, medicine, geography, military technology, and others. Other halls also showcase Islamic artworks and archaeological pieces divided according to Islamic periods.

The museum is located on the Sharjah Corniche, north of the Heart of Sharjah district. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Al Mahatta Museum

Step into the world of Emirati aviation history at Al Mahatta Museum, originally established as an airport in 1932. Converted into a museum in 2000, it provides a compelling journey through the evolution of aviation in the UAE and the region. For aviation enthusiasts, the museum screens films showcasing past airport events and air traffic.  Inside the aircraft hangar, visitors are entranced by the sight of large planes adorned with big propellers, initially appearing ready to take flight. 

The museum is located near Al Mahatta Park in Al Mahatta area, opposite Al Qasimya district. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to  8:00 PM.

Bait Al Naboodah Museum

Bait Al Naboodah was the residence of the late Obaid bin Eissa bin Ali Al Shamsi, one of the region’s most prominent merchants in the past. He was renowned as one of Sharjah’s leading pearl merchants, with commercial connections spanning India, Africa, and France.

While its history dates back to 1845, Bait Al Naboodah was first opened as a museum in 1995 before undergoing restoration and reopening again in 2018. This two-story house is distinguished by its design, which incorporates Indian wooden columns and magnificent plaster and wood carvings, among other distinctive details. These features make it a prime example of traditional Emirati architecture.

Bait Al Naboodah is located in the Heart of Sharjah, in Al Mareija area, opposite Al Eslah School Museum and Souq Al Arsah. The museum’s visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Art Museum

Since its opening in 1997, this museum has captivated both art enthusiasts and novices with its collection of artworks and exhibitions by prominent local and Arab artists. The museum also houses the Art Library, containing over 4,000 titles in Arabic, English, and other languages. To enhance the visitors’ experience, the museum hosts a variety of local and international exhibitions, cultural events, and educational art workshops throughout the year.

The Sharjah Art Museum is located in the Heart of Sharjah, specifically in the Arts Area, Al Shuwaihiyeen, near Al-Corniche post office. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Calligraphy Museum

The presence of the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum may initially surprise visitors, as it offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolution of Arabic calligraphy. This museum showcases stunning calligraphic texts, letters, and shapes created by prominent local and international calligraphers and artists.

The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum was inaugurated in 2002 and is now located in Calligraphy Square in the Heart of Sharjah district. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Maritime Museum

The people of Sharjah have a deep connection to the sea, which is why the Sharjah Maritime Museum shares their thrilling adventures and tales. Originally opened in 2003 in Al Mareija, the museum was relocated to the Al Khan neighborhood in 2009. Visitors can see traditional wooden ships, among other vessels used for trade, fishing, and pearl diving. One of the museum’s most captivating highlights is its stunning pearl collection, which displays pearls harvested by the ancestors of the people of Sharjah, who once ventured deep into the Gulf to collect them.

Sharjah Maritime Museum is located in Al Khan neighbourhood, adjacent to Sharjah Aquarium. The museum is open Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Science Museum

The Sharjah Science Museum, inaugurated in 1996, promises an exceptional experience to visitors of all age groups. The museum provides visitors with valuable information and engaging scientific activities and experiments in various fields, including biology, astronomy, and physics and its principles. With diverse programs, events, and interactive exhibits, it encourages its visitors to unleash their creativity, innovation, and scientific imagination.

The museum is located in Al Abar area on Sheikh Rashid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Road, which leads to Sharjah Broadcasting Authority. It welcomes visitors Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn)

Sharjah Fort or Sharjah Al Hisn Museum transports visitors back to life in the emirate over 200 years ago, introducing them to the history of the ruling family and the nature of daily life at that time, while also showcasing ancient defence methods and other notable features.

The fort was first opened in 1997, then renovated and reopened in 2015. It stands out not only for its impressive collection of photographs and archaeological artefacts but also for its use of coral stones in constructing the fort’s walls and teak wood for its doors. The fort was historically used for defending Sharjah and its people, and at one point, it served as the residence and headquarters of Al Qasimi ruling family of the emirate.

To visit the Sharjah Fort, head to Al Hisn Avenue in the Heart of Sharjah district. The visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Hisn Khorfakkan

Hisn Khorfakkan was inaugurated on April 13, 2019, following renovations overseen by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi. The fort was reconstructed to educate visitors about the history of Sharjah Emirate's east coast and to showcase artefacts discovered in the region, including ancient rock inscriptions and copper remnants from the Iron Age.

This museum stands out for its innovative use of visual aids, storytelling, and technology to provide visitors with an immersive experience, transporting them back to historical periods of the past.

Hisn Khorfakkan is situated in the old market area, across from the vegetable and fruit market in the city of Khorfakkan, Sharjah Emirate. The visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Al Eslah School Museum

Constructed in 1935, Al Eslah School, Sharjah’s first formal educational institution, was converted into a museum in April 2003. It has evolved into an ideal destination for those interested in discovering the old educational system in the UAE. Visitors can immerse themselves in this experience by exploring the classrooms, sitting in the seats, viewing photographs of graduates, and examining items such as wooden boards and chalks.

Al Eslah School Museum is located opposite Bait Al Naboodah Museum, next to Souq Al Arsah in the Heart of Sharjah district. The visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Discovery Centre

Sharjah Discovery Centre, dedicated to children aged 3 to 12, opened its doors on March 18, 1999. It stands out for offering a blend of fun, educational, and scientific experiences, providing children with a safe and family-friendly introduction to various technologies and sciences. This centre is divided into seven distinct areas, each offering a unique educational theme, including Water World, Airport, Body World, Build Town, Drive Town, Sports World, and TV Studio.

This centre is located on Sharjah Airport Road, between the 4th and 5th intersections, across from Sharjah Classic Cars Museum and Sharjah International Airport. The visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Resistance Monument

The Resistance Monument was inaugurated on Saturday, April 13, 2019. His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi ordered its establishment to honour the people of Khorfakkan and their resistance against the Portuguese invasion in 1507. The monument’s design, resembling a warrior’s helmet, symbolises the emirate’s rich history. It also serves as a beacon of wisdom and knowledge.

The Resistance Monument is located in the Al Qadisiya area, facing the flagpole landmark on the banks of Khorfakkan Square. It can be visited Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Sharjah Heritage Museum

Sharjah Heritage Museum is one of the premier traditional heritage museums in the emirate, offering visitors a glimpse into the ancient culture of the UAE, with a particular focus on the Sharjah emirate.

The museum introduces visitors to authentic Arabian traditions, including generosity and hospitality, marriage customs, and lifestyle events. It stands out for its authentic depiction of ancestral living environments, from the coastal areas to mountains and agricultural settings. It aims to instil pride in heritage among future generations, encouraging them to embrace their cultural legacy.

The Sharjah Heritage Museum opened in 2005 in the Heritage Area. It 2012, it was relocated to its new location in the Heart of Sharjah, across from Souq Al Arsah, near Bait Al Naboodah and the Theatrical Association. Visiting hours are Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
