In job interviews, the impression one makes is as significant as their CV or academic qualifications. Personal interviews allow employers to learn about the applicant's personality and skills, determining their suitability for the job and the company. Therefore, thorough preparation and practise are essential to present oneself positively and effectively.
The most crucial skills for a successful personal interview are:

Research skill

A job seeker must dedicate sufficient time to searching both the company and the job applied for before the personal interview. This helps better understand the company's culture, job requirements, and how to respond effectively during the interview.

One of the most effective ways to prepare before an interview is by thoroughly reviewing the company's website, especially its profile information, and conducting a Google search for additional insights.

Following the company's social media platforms can also provide an overview of its culture and social activities. Additionally, searching job platforms that feature reviews and assessments of current and former employees will offer a comprehensive understanding of the company’s culture, policies, and other related matters, aiding in better preparation for the interview.

Preparation skill

Pre-interview preparation is an essential part of success. Attending an interview without adequate preparation can reduce job opportunities. Therefore, applicants must allocate sufficient time to prepare in advance to answer questions and clarify their experiences and skills effectively.

Interview preparation should focus on clearly identifying personal and professional strengths that align with the job requirements. Applicants should re-read the job description and prepare well-thought-out answers to potential questions. Moreover, preparing a portfolio highlighting previous experiences and achievements relevant to the position is crucial.

To be fully prepared for an in-person interview, practising conducting interviews and answering questions with someone close, such as a family member or friend, is recommended. This practise helps improve communication skills, increase self-confidence, and prepare candidates for various scenarios.

Punctuality Skill

Arriving at the interview on time demonstrates the applicant's respect for the interview schedule and enthusiasm for the job. This typically leaves a positive impression on the employer regarding the applicant's professionalism and punctuality.

Applicants should arrive at the interview location at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. To ensure punctuality, it is advisable to prepare the interview attire and all required documents, such as the CV, cover letter, and relevant certificate, in advance. These documents provide comprehensive information about the candidate's qualifications and explain their reasons for applying for the job.

Additionally, planning for the day of the interview is crucial. This includes getting a good night's sleep, waking up on time, and arranging reliable transportation to the interview location or ensuring internet access if the interview is remote.

Professionalism skill

Demonstrating professionalism during an interview significantly increases the chances of success. Professionalism encompasses a range of qualities, including courtesy in dealing with others, using professional language, greeting, listening, answering questions, showing respect and kindness, and maintaining a high professional ethic throughout the interview.

Furthermore, a key aspect of professionalism is paying attention to overall appearance, including selecting appropriate attire for job interviews. This means choosing formal clothing in neutral colours and avoiding anything exaggerated.

Communication skill

Effective communication encompasses verbal and non-verbal communications, both of which are very crucial as they reflect the applicant's understanding of the job and their ability to connect with others during the interview.

In terms of verbal communication during an interview, it is crucial to choose words carefully and express qualifications and experiences clearly and attentively. Mirroring the interviewer’s communication style, whether formal or informal, is also beneficial. Additionally, it is essential to abstain from interruptions or using sounds like "Umm" during the conversation. On the other hand, non-verbal communication includes body language cues like smiling appropriately and maintaining eye contact to convey respect and attentiveness.

Practising communication skills in advance by conducting mock interviews with friends and family, speaking calmly and thoughtfully during them, and taking time to respond to the interviewer's questions can enhance these skills.

Self-introduction skill

Introducing oneself clearly and confidently allows others to understand the speaker’s potential, builds self-confidence, and makes a positive impression. This skill is fundamental for successfully passing a personal interview. Applicants should be prepared to present themselves with a clear and concise introduction showcasing their experience and skills in alignment with the job requirements.

Listening skill

Effective listening skills are essential during job interviews; they help optimise understanding of what is said, avoid misunderstanding, and demonstrate interest and respect for the interviewer. Mastering this skill also helps the candidate determine the suitability of the position. Demonstrating listening skills can involve non-verbal cues such as nodding, attentive listening, and asking for clarification when needed.

Question-asking skill

Mastering the skill of asking questions facilitates deeper understanding and greater exchange of information during the job interview. It also demonstrates the applicant's interest in the vacancy. Applicants should prepare questions in advance for the interview and be ready to ask them when the appropriate opportunity arises.
