Sharjah24: Sheikh Dr. Salem Al-Doubi, head of the Preaching and Fatwa Section at the Department of Islamic Affairs in Sharjah, offers a simplified explanation of the meanings and significance hidden within the verses of the Holy Quran throughout the holy month of Ramadan via the programme "Nur Al-Quran," broadcasted on Sharjah 24 platforms every Monday and Wednesday.
Today's discussion centres around the interpretation of the Quranic verse: "O you who have believed, fasting has been decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you, so that you may become righteous. [Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:183-184)
Allah's mention of "specified days" indicates a limited or concise period, as a few days are easier to manage. These "specified days" refer to the month of Ramadan.
By stating "{specified days}," Allah initially informs us of the obligation of fasting, then provides clarity by specifying "{the month of Ramadan}," underscoring that the month comprises a set number of days to simplify its observance and facilitate for those fasting. It's as though Allah, in His mercy, is telling us: We have ordained fasting for a specific month, its duration is defined, and we have not made it longer than that, out of compassion and to make it manageable for you.
