The festival will feature open races for participants from the UAE and other Gulf countries, including two categories comprising 24 races for Al-Haqqa'a camels and 26 races for Al-Laqaya camels, including races for symbolic camels and general races, all culminating in prizes. The festival will award valuable cash and in-kind prizes, in addition to a sword presented by His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah. The festival will also include eight races specifically for the residents of the region.
Saeed Rashid bin Fadel Al Kutbi, the Director of Al Wousta Channel in Al Dhaid, said, 'The festival has become an annual tradition aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the Emirate of Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates as a whole, and safeguarding the popular heritage that Emiratis still take pride in, in addition to stimulating economic activity in the Al Dhaid region.'
He added, 'In light of the progress witnessed by the UAE in all aspects of life, its interest in heritage has not waned. Nations derive their identity from their deep-rooted heritage, which is ingrained in the hearts of their people and is an integral part of their history. Hence, the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority is keen on organizing an annual camel racing festival to join the series of heritage sporting events held in Sharjah, which adds value to the efforts aimed at promoting the authenticity and significance of this heritage. We look forward to the fourth edition of the festival, which reflects our aspirations to celebrate one of our most famous traditional sports, through which we revive the rituals of the past that were celebrated by this beautiful city and the entire country for decades, in a step that confirms the close relationship between the heritage of our ancestors and our bright present.'
Matar Ali bin Hweidan, the Chairman of the Sharjah Camel Racing Club, expressed gratitude to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for his support by establishing Al Wousta Channel in Al Dhaid as a media beacon for the residents of Al Dhaid. He also praised His Highness for his contributions in various fields of development, including sports. He commended the efforts of Al Wousta Channel in Al Dhaid in reviving the heritage and organizing the festival, as well as honoring the guests from UAE and outside the country .
Bin Hweidan emphasized the festival's management's commitment to allocating races for camel owners from the Al Wousta region to enable them to participate actively and to honor the winners among them. The festival will witness a variety of races during the morning and evening sessions, including 24 races for Al-Haqqa'a camels and 26 races for Al-Laqaya camels, including eight races specifically for the residents of the region. Both categories will offer valuable cash and in-kind prizes.
It is worth noting that the festival was launched under the directives of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah following the inauguration of Al Wousta Channel building in Al Dhaid in February 2020.
