Sharjah24: The Arabic Language Education Centre for the Gulf States (ALECGS) revealed the details of its organization of the Arabic language competitions for the Gulf States in the fifth edition of 2024 under the slogan “In Arabic...we innovate” during the period from 17th to 21st of February. At the center’s headquarters in the University City of Sharjah.
The Center organizes the competitions under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education of the United Arab Emirates and with the participation of students from all member states from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Kuwait, the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
The Arabic Language Competition is a periodic competition in the Arabic language for students of member states of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, organized and supervised by the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States in Sharjah, and comes within its programs for the session (1444/1445 AH corresponding to 2023/2024 AD).
It is scheduled to be held from February 17 to 21, 2024 at the center’s headquarters in the University City in Sharjah, where Gulf student delegations will arrive in the UAE on the 17th February, written exams will be held on 18th February, and oral exams on 19th of February. The closing ceremony will be held on 21st February.
Dr. Issa Saleh Al-Hammadi, Director of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language, Dr. Emhamed Safi Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, member of the Scientific Committee for judging Arabic language competitions, and Adel Wahib, Director of Program Management at the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States will take part in the event in addition to a group of invitees and entities from the center’s partners.
During the press conference, Dr. Issa Saleh Al Hammadi spoke about the importance of the competition in enhancing linguistic identity and motivating students to develop their skills in the Arabic language.
He stressed that competitions work to discover the linguistic potentials, skills and abilities of students, and work to stimulate and develop linguistic creativity among young people, emphasising that their importance is to create the appropriate environment to raise scientific competition among students of member states, enrich school curricula, and contribute to the development of teaching and learning the Arabic language.
Al-Hammadi pointed out the sub-objectives of the competitions, which are to enhance loyalty and belonging to the Arabic language in young people, stimulate early linguistic talents and creativity in the field of the Arabic language for students of member states, strengthen ties, enhance communication between creators of the Arabic language at all levels, and stoke the spirit of competition between creative and talented students in the field.
He stated that the Ministry of Education for each member state of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States nominates a maximum of 3 students who meet the following conditions: The student must be a citizen of the participating country and be nominated by it, and the student must be a regular in one of the public education schools (governmental or private) in the participating country, and that the student’s age on the opening day of the competition must not exceed nineteen years and six months, and that the student must be one of those who has passed the nomination and selection stages in the participating country.
Dr. Mohamed Safi Mosteghanemi sparked light on the importance of the competition in discovering talented students and guiding them to invest in their abilities, and stressed the importance of strengthening ties and enhancing communication between creative people in the Arabic language. He touched on the importance of the competition and its role in graduating generations who are committed to and proficient in the Arabic language, as the participating students from the Gulf countries are considered the elite of students familiar with the Arabic language. He noted that the competitions represent a fundamental vision in discovering creative and talented students in the field of the Arabic language and directing them to invest their abilities and contribute to the development of the Arabic language.
Adel Wahib explained the details of the competitions and their objectives based on developing the students’ Arabic language skills, as the test is conducted in two stages. The first stage is the written test, which consists of a written test session that is scheduled for the competitors. The test includes deep, atypical questions that reveal higher-level thinking skills in the field of the Arabic language. It covers the following areas: (reading comprehension skills, spelling and punctuation, grammar rules, literature and rhetoric, and writing) and the second stage is the oral interview, which is a personal interview conducted for those who qualify from the first stage of the written test.
He pointed out that the students who win medals in competitions are determined according to the results of the first and second stages, and competition awards vary to include medals of three types (gold, silver, and bronze), certificates of appreciation (granted to the winning students), and certificates of participation (granted to all participating students).
