Sharjah24: The Sharjah Press Club (SPC), an initiative of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, on Monday hosted a dialogue session between representatives of leading media organisations in the country and officials of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA). Held as part of the Club’s ‘Tawasul’ initiative, the interaction aimed at promoting constructive engagement with the UAE media, and introducing the Authority’s latest initiatives, ongoing development plans and upcoming projects in support of the Emirate’s efforts for sustainable development and progress of its cultural, commercial and tourism sectors.
The meeting, held at the SRTA headquarters, was attended by Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, HE Tariq Saeed Allay, Director General of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, Alya Al Suwaidi, Director of SGMB, Asma Al Juwaied, Manager, Sharjah Press Club, and Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Jarwan, Director of SRTA's Transport Affairs, Eng. Sulaiman Abdelrahman Al Hajri, Director of SRTA’s Roads Affairs, and a number of heads of departments and senior officials.
Passenger Numbers Surge to 44,750,477
Speaking on the occasion, SRTA officials revealed that the total number of public transport users during the year 2023 had surged to 44,750,477 passengers. While 32,768,656 passengers used public taxis, 11,932,880 passengers chose to use the STRA bus fleet. The number of users of marine transport during the 6 months stood at 48,941 passengers.
The SRTA call centre received as many as 616,312 calls during the year 2023, while the number of calls requesting services reached 381,863.
SRTA Chairman Engineer Youssef Al Othmani stressed that the Authority is sparing no efforts in serving the public transport users in the Emirate. He pointed out that in order to serve Sharjah’s residents effectively and smoothly the public transport provider has adopted the global best practices and methods of communication, employing the latest technologies to keep pace with the rapid developments in media and communication technology.
Social media accounts and sites are constantly reviewed and updated by the Authority and communication channels with various media organisations in the country are regularly maintained in order to offer smooth services at all times, Al Othmani added, emphasising that all news and developments about the roads and transportation system in Sharjah are shared with the public promptly to to keep them abreast in case of any changes, emphasised Al Othmani.
The SRTA Chairman said, “the Authority is keen to work according to a clear strategy and a deliberate approach to the continuous development and improvement of internal roads in the emirate, all of which come under the Authority’s purview, to ensure the road system in the emirate remains world-class in accordance with the highest international standards.” The Authority has adopted an approach of development and innovation by working jointly with various stakeholders and relevant departments and authorities.
Tariq Saeed Allay stressed the keenness of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau to build and extend bridges of communication and dialogue between the various Sharjah government institutions and media outlets in the UAE and beyond, in a way that complements the emirate’s constant efforts for the development and upgrading of its services and infrastructure.
He lauded the productive media engagement with the SRTA and the transparency of the engagement and dialogue with the various media networks today that resulted in healthy exchange of information and feedback between the two sides.
The Sharjah Press Club launched the Tawasul initiative in 2018, with the aim of organising periodic meetings that bring together representatives of local newspapers and officials of government entities in Sharjah to enable fruitful and constructive dialogue, share insights about the ongoing and upcoming projects and developments as well as feedback.
