Sharjah 24: Dr Mariam Al Hashmi, an academic and critic, participated in a morning debate session that the Emirati women poets and writers had as part of their monthly intellectual meeting on Sharjah's Corniche in the Literary Café on Sharjah's Corniche, and it was hosted by the Cultural and Media Office of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah.
Notable guests included Salha Obeid Ghabesh, Director General of the Cultural and Media Office, and a number of Emirati women authors and readers.

Salha Obeid Ghabesh, in her opening remarks, stressed the need to recognise and celebrate the achievements of Emirati women writers and their contributions to the country's literary scene.

In her exploration of pre-Islamic poetry, Dr Al Hashmi highlighted the fact that the Arabs would host marketplaces during certain months for trade and poetic exchanges.

Until it acquired its well-known form, this poetry passed through many stages, which Dr Al Hashmi outlined. She made a point that poets in the period before Islam also served as literary critics. She also talked about the metre, qualities, and traits of that poetry.

Participation from Emirati women in the UAE literary scene was welcomed and encouraged during the event.
