Sharjah 24: The Arabic Language Education Centre for the Gulf States (ALECGS) in Sharjah concluded, Wednesday evening, its participation in the fifth Makkah International Conference on Arabic Language and Literature, which was organised by Inthra Elmarafa for Conferences, Researches and Scientific Publishing in cooperation with the Arabic Language Academy in Makkah, under the theme "Arabic Language and Sciences".
In the first session of the two-day conference, Dr. Abdulaziz bin Ali Al-Harbi presented a paper titled "The Arabic Language in the 21st Century", reminding that Arab-language speakers were the first to create dictionaries, arrange their entries and establish their Arabic roots.

According to him, the Arabic language carries elements of universality, and has the ability to keep pace with developments and modernity.

Former minister of education Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Obaid tackled the future of teaching and learning Arabic language in Indonesia, which is one of the largest Islamic countries.

The Kingdom's former permanent representative to UNESCO, Dr. Ziyad bin Abdullah Al-Drees, spoke about the spread of the Arabic language internationally, and said that making Arabic an international language, alongside English, Spanish, French, Russian and Chinese, is an achievement for which Arab diplomats at the time the UN was founded deserve credit.

He also talked about the decline in the use of Arabic language, in many Arab countries and in international organizations, reminding that in 2007, Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Program to Support the Arabic Language was established at UNESCO.

Dr. Issa Al-Hammadi, the GCC representative of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language, talked about developing e-reading skills for secondary school students, mentioning the fact that interest in e-books has gradually increased, libraries are eager to acquire them, and book reading has become more widespread than before among general readers, especially since libraries lend books, thus encouraging reading.

Dr. Al-Hammadi praised the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting education in general and the Arabic language in particular and spreading its teaching and learning at the international level. He also thanked organisers, participants and the attendees for their considerable efforts.

He touched on the efforts of the Educational Centre in Sharjah, which enjoys the support of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah which has contributed greatly  to making many achievements in the field of studies, research, training courses, seminars, conferences, partnerships, and others, in an effort to achieve the centre’s goal of developing teaching the Arabic language, in addition to His Highness’s efforts in supporting the historical dictionary.

Dr. Issa Saleh Al-Hammadi, Director of the Educational Center for the Arabic Language for the Gulf States, presented the study’s recommendations, which included recommendations related to academic e-reading, free e-reading, as well as other related fields.
