Sharjah24: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) has initiated efforts to regulate the operations of charitable and nonprofit organisations in the emirate. This involves the issuance of licenses by the Licensing and Social Work Department, a division of the SSSD.
Kholoud Al Nuaimi, Director of the Licensing and Social Work Department at SSSD, clarified that the purpose of these licenses is to strengthen the oversight of charitable activities in the emirate, elevate the quality of social services, and foster collaboration among various entities in the social sector. The goal is also to activate the role of nonprofit institutions and establish a legal framework that outlines roles and responsibilities in line with relevant legislation within the geographical boundaries of Sharjah. This framework ensures their capability to achieve their objectives.

Kholoud mentioned, "Our work began subsequent to the decree issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The law granted SSSD local authority, designating it as the competent authority for regulating nonprofit organisations in the emirate."

She added, "The license for associations and institutions either permits or prohibits their voluntary, humanitarian, and social activities. It regulates institutions and associations with public benefit that are established by members of the community. They obtain non-objection approvals. Subsequently, the institution or association is licensed by the Licensing and Social Work Department, enabling it to conduct its voluntary activities and provide services to the targeted beneficiaries."

In Sharjah, around 45 institutions and associations have received approval from the Ministry of Community Development after fulfilling specific requirements. These prerequisites include founders holding Emirati citizenship, a minimum of 25 individuals, and ages above 18 years. Additionally, a certificate of good conduct and behaviour is essential.
