Sharjah 24: The 12th edition of the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF 2023), in Sharjah, continued to inspire and educate on its second day, as changemakers of all age groups, abilities and backgrounds took to stage to share their firm belief in knowledge, sustainability and global cooperation shaping a brighter future for all.
Alya Al Suwaidi reiterates Sharjah Ruler’s vision of unity
Her Excellency Alya Al Suwaidi, Director of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), opened the day’s discussions with a thought-provoking speech that underscored the interconnectedness of global challenges. She highlighted the vast disparities in wealth and resources worldwide, where millions struggle to survive on less than one dollar a day, contrasting with the surge in scientific advancements and newfound wealth.
Al Suwaidi said, “Echoing the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the need for collective action to address these disparities is vital for sustainable progress. Civilisation is measured by our collective values and human partnerships, which sets the stage for a profound exploration of shared responsibility between us all.”
Shaikha Chaica Al Qassimi: A voice for inclusion
Shaikha Chaica Al Qassimi, Self-advocate coordinator of the Self-Advocacy Unit in Sharjah City of Humanitarian Services, shared her remarkable journey from isolation to acceptance. She urged the world to fully embrace those with disabilities, professing that being different is a blessing, not a curse.
Shaikha Chaica Al Qassimi commended Sharjah for its efforts in creating an accessible city for people of determination. She also highlighted the UAE’s National Initiative for 2020-2030, aimed at addressing the needs of people with determination in various aspects of society, stating: “Sharjah's commitment to inclusivity is a shining example, and we must strive for global education and the eradication of discrimination.”
Professor Dr. Ger Graus of KidZania: ‘Education is always the answer’
Professor Dr. Ger Graus, Global Director of Education at KidZania — one of the fastest growing global interactive learning and entertainment brands with 28 locations all around the globe — began his talk with a poignant quote by Desmond Tutu, “Whatever the question, education is always the answer." He emphasised that education is the key to shaping the future and making meaningful choices in life.
Prof Graus highlighted the importance of personalisation in learning and the need for schools to become community service centres, focusing on the holistic development of children. He encouraged embracing technology and lifelong learning, as 65% of future jobs are yet to be created. He stressed the importance of ethics and morality as the foundation of good education, urging the shift from ‘good tech’ to ‘Tech for good’.
Graus reiterated his strong advocacy for a change in the system of accountability to reflect the true essence of each child.
Isatou Ceesay: The ‘Recycling Queen's’ inspiring story
Isatou Ceesay, the Gambian environmentalist and social entrepreneur known as the ‘Recycling Queen’, shared her remarkable journey with the IGCF 2023 audience. She described her challenging upbringing in a low-income environment and how education became the tool to enlighten her village about the detrimental effects of pollution.
Ceesay's initiative started with recycling plastic bags, but expanded to organic farming, composting, bee-keeping, and more. “In Gambia, women became caretakers of their environment and promoted sustainability. I am proud of the role we actively take to protect the land we live on”, she stated.
As Director of the Gambia Women's Initiative (WIG) registered in 2012, the organisation has recently been developing alternatives to charcoal briquettes to combat deforestation. Ceesay's story underscored the power of determination and self-belief in bringing about change, no matter the obstacles faced. She urged collaboration to create a better environment.
Counsellor Andrew Rzepa: The journey to zero hunger
Counsellor Andrew Rzepa, Partner at Gallup and Public Sector Executive Director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, addressed the pressing issue of hunger worldwide. He posed a thought-provoking question, "Have you ever been genuinely hungry?" Rzepa highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, particularly the goal of achieving zero hunger globally.
Rzepa shared insights from Gallup's data collection efforts, spanning over 140 countries and representing 98% of the world's adult population. Delving into the revelations that have come from Gallup’s expansive data, Rzepa stated, “The commonality of food security principles across cultures is undeniable, and the significance of accurate and comparable data cannot be overstated in our efforts to effectively address food insecurity. The global endeavours to combat hunger and underscore the imperative of a unified approach to achieving zero hunger by 2030 are a vital step towards global food security.”
IGCF 2023, organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB) under the theme ‘Today's Resources.. Tomorrow's Wealth,’ continues to be a platform for thought-provoking discussions on education, sustainability, and global challenges. These inspirational talks have served as a catalyst for positive change and reinforced the importance of collaboration in shaping a better future for all.
