Sharjah 24: Dr. Osama Hussain Qanbar, official in charge of the experimental wheat at the Government of Sharjah’s Department of Agriculture and Livestock, said that the wheat farm project "Seven Spikes", whose first stage harvest has become in the markets, is one of the important strategic projects for food security in the emirate and the UAE at large.
Qanbar’s words came while participating in the activities of Khorfakkan University’s Ramadan Majlis, which focused on food security and the Sharjah wheat farm project in the Mleiha area.
Qanbar said to “Sharjah 24” that the project, which stems from the visions and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, is one of the major strategic projects that enhance food security for the emirate and the state.
He explained that the first phase of the project achieved an impressive success that exceeded expectations within one year. The harvest of wheat became accessible to everyone in the markets, and it is one of the best types of wheat in the world with its high nutritional value.
He indicated that the project faced many challenges, and as a result of the unlimited support given by the wise leadership of the project, the most advanced technologies in the world were provided to overcome obstacles related to irrigation and water extraction, and achieve the desired goals.
Qanbar added that the first phase of the project included the cultivation of 400 hectares in the Mleiha area, provided that the area will extend to 880 hectares in the second phase, and to 1900 hectares in the third phase.
