During the workshop, Prof. Ilias Fernini, Director of the Space Sciences Department, welcomed the speakers and audience, stressing the Academy's keenness to organize astronomical events of concern to the community. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of this workshop which aims to discuss several subjects related to the holy month of Ramadan from the scientific and religious perspectives. After that, he discussed Ramadan's crescent moon sighting and the lunar cycle.
The workshop included two lectures. The first one was by Prof. Abdal Samee Al-Aniess from the Department Foundations of Religion, under the title "The crescent of Ramadan in the light of the Hadith." Prof. Abdal Samee addressed the virtue of the blessed month of Ramadan, the sight of the Ramadan crescent, and highlighted jurisprudence and astronomical criteria. Next, Prof. Nidhal Guessoum from the American University of Sharjah (AUS), discussed the Islamic calendar and astronomical studies related to the Ramadan crescent moon sighting.
