Sharjah 24: The Conservation Department of Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) launched a new Conservation Ambassadors Programme for students to consolidate the culture of conservation, raise awareness and support the sustainability process.
The five-day programme includes educational and technical workshops, during which students compete with innovative projects and ideas to obtain the golden card and the title of Conservation Ambassador; distinguished students are selected for another stage to obtain the silver card and then the bronze card by participating in new workshops and projects.

Engineer Ghada Juma Salem, Director of the Conservation Department, confirmed that the SEWA exerts efforts to engage children and school students in environmental protection issues and instill a culture of rationalising energy and water consumption from a young age.

A number of specialised programmes have been prepared with the aim of providing students with new skills in an atmosphere that combines fun and benefits, as SEWA launched the “Ambassadors of Conservation” initiative for this year, which aims to select a number of students to be ambassadors for conservation and to cooperate with SEWA in instilling the right conservation behaviours and to implement best practices.

Basma Al Ketbi, Head of the Behaviour Change at the Conservation Department, indicated that the programme depends on creativity and innovation to raise students’ awareness about the importance and culture of conservation, and introduce them to the stages of energy production, water desalination and the best means and practices to reduce energy and water consumption, and the electricity and water bill at school and at home.

The educational and technical workshops will include some innovative ideas, such as a solar-powered robot and a link to educational games. At the end of the programme, the participants’ projects will be discussed and experimented to qualify them to earn the title of Conservation Ambassador and the Golden Card.
